AFTER TWO HOURS OF loud music, pumped fans, and an energetic entertainer, Brett thanked his audience with an encore.

“Without you, the fans, the music isn’t the same. Playing loud and having fun is why we’re here. Sing along with me, to ʻSweet Summer’”

Brett’s rhythmic steps stopped before he exited the stage. He raised his arm, his hand forming a fist to hit that last beat of the drum. The lights went out and he moved backstage. The sight of Andi with Rick stopped him in his tracks. Rick looked pissed and Andi seemed upset. He guessed the two most important people in his world were fighting because of him. Brett stood out of their sight.

“I wasn’t worried with you in business attire and with your professional credits, but now you’re in denims.” Rick’s arms spread wide open. His body language screamed out frustration and worry. Brett knew his friend was worried about his sister and the tour.

He heard Andi defend herself. “I’m comfortable. You’re in denims! And if this is about last night’s kiss—”

Rick interrupted her. “You’re damn right it’s about the kiss. What were you thinking? Both of you. We’re professionals here, and you’re my sister.”

Andi piped up, “Don’t make it about my professionalism, and I’ve been your sister for, like, five minutes.”

Rick ran his hand through his hair. “We may not have known each other long, but the past few weeks have brought us close. Five minutes, five years—you are my sister. I don’t want to see you hurt. I’ve known Brett for a long time. I know his long list of affairs.” Rick started to turn and stopped. “And, I can’t have you two screw up this tour. Keep me out of this. You two need to talk. End it. Fix it. But keep this tour on track.” He stormed away.

Brett lowered his head. Rick was right. It wasn’t only his heart at risk, but the tour. He knew he had to talk to Andi. Silently, he prayed she felt the same way. They could make it work, whatever it was, and keep the tour running smoothly. He needed her in his heart, in his life, and on the tour. A stagehand tapped his shoulder with a bottle of water. Brett thanked him and took a swig of the cold liquid. When he turned, Andi was gone. He only hoped by the time he got back to the hotel, she’d answer her door.
